Introduction to a Comm Major's Gamer Life
Hello everyone,
My name is Jake Compton and I am a Senior Communication Major. I have been in college since FA 2012 and have changed my major a few times starting with Chemical Engineering, moving to Finance, and finally settling on Communication. Initially I went to The University of Tulsa and played football my freshman year, but the struggles of football plus Chem E. was a lot to handle and I ended up transferring out and going to community college for a while. Finally making my way to OU as a Finance major however after doing very bad in Calc 2 I finally switched to Communication. Lucky for me, I want to be a sales rep. for a chemical company such as Chevron Phillips, Exxon, Shell, etc. and there are many majors that I can use to achieve that. After quitting football I was looking for something to do competitively and my brother introduced me to Magic: The Gathering and I have been playing that semi-competitively since 2013 and plan on being more competitive after graduation. Most recently, I have been playing PC games such as League of Legends, Smite, Diablo III: Reaper of Souls. I stream my games to Twitch.tv afternoons when I've managed to finish a lot of my work but almost every day of the weekend Friday through Sunday. A friend and I started our own small Esports organization where we field a competitive League of Legends team, MTG team, and have a team of fellow Streamers on twitch. Right now my days are waking up early in the morning to go to Gold's Gym coming home to do assignments online, going to campus for school classes, go back to Gold's and finally coming home for more assignments. My League of Legends team plays in a recreational league called the Oklahoma League Championship Series or OKLCS and we practice around 3 days a week and then have games on weekends. The games themselves are streamed and shout casted (live commentary) by organizers of the OKLCS. If you yourself enjoy games feel free to ask about my stream, Esports team or the OKLCS as much as you want!

How cool that your League of Legends games are streamed like that, Jake: are the streams archived somewhere? Let me know if there is a videocast or something I could share in the class announcements; that would be really fun as something to include! And I hope this class can be a boost for your sales rep future: storytelling can be a big part of a job like that. One student in India Epics class last semester did a fun PR-based project which is something similar; it turned out really well I thought: she imagined a PR firm set in the world of the Indian Epics: Image.PR: India's highest ranked PR Firm. You might get some ideas for a project of your own there. Anyway, you can see what you think when you start brainstorming project topics later this week! :-)
ReplyDeleteHi Jake! I have also been in college since 2012, usually part-time, and have had a few courses that I've had trouble with (particularly Organic Chemistry). I also went to a community college before OU and it helped me quite a bit to get use to the college work-load. I played football in high school and had a friend that graduated with me (Luetjen if that sounds familiar), go play football for Tulsa as well. The stream seems awesome man, hope all goes well!
ReplyDeleteHi Jake!
ReplyDeleteI too am a senior! I have technically changed my major 3 times as well, however, I built my own major in the end via Planned Program so I did not fall too far behind fortunately! I was Biology, than HES, and have settled into Planned Program, so they were not quite as different as yours. I am glad you found what you like now! I wish you the best of luck!
That is so fun that your games are steamed! I bet your parents love that! My mom misses watching me play soccer so much that she still tries to come to my recreational indoor soccer games!
Hi Jake!
ReplyDeleteCommunication is an interesting major that I looked into for awhile and almost chose, but I ended up in PR. I imagine how hard it must have been balancing football and those difficult classes at once. It looks like you have a pretty definite direction after college, and I'm glad you have it (mostly) figured out. I'm not very familiar with the games you stream, or any for that matter, but they sound extremely interesting! I wish you the best of luck on your final year!
Hi Jake! I have some family members that played football while going to school, and that is a schedule that I wouldn't wish on anyone...it looked absolutely exhausting! It's good that you finally found major that you enjoy and is more inline with your goals. Sometimes it takes a while to find the right fit, but in the end it's much better than trying to force something that just doesn't feel right. The games you mentioned all sound interesting. I'm familiar with Magic: The Gathering, and I love Diablo III, but I haven't really heard about some of the others. I'll have to check them out!
ReplyDeleteHi Jake! I I cannot imagine how hard it would be to balance school and football all at once. I was going to run track in college and did not because I wanted to focus on school since I was not planning on continuing track after college. I am glad that you have found something that makes you happy. Props to you for not just settling but instead you decided to find something that makes you happy.
ReplyDeleteHey Jake. Wow your college experience sounds incredible! It's great that you got to experience playing the sport you love at the collegiate level for a while. I am a senior chemical engineering major so I definitely feel you on having the sports on top of that school work. But I am glad you found something your passionate about. Anyways, good luck this semester and finishing up your senior year!
ReplyDeleteHey Jake. I am from Tulsa and have been to a few football games thee! I like that you have switched around majors to find out what you truly want to do. I also think it is really cool how you actually compete in your video games and even stream it. I've never been so good at video games but I enjoy watching people play. Good luck with the rest of your college career this semester!
ReplyDeleteHello Jake! It is nice to meet another fellow Tulsa resident in this class. I used to play League of Legends so much until the start of college, when I don't have much time to play anymore, I stopped playing. And Diablo III is great! Though I still follow and enjoy all the competition series and the World as well! Although you change majors, I am glad that you finally get to do what you want and enjoy. Good luck with the rest of semester and nice to meet you.
ReplyDeleteMy husband is a chemical engineer, and he told me he wouldn't have wanted to play football as well as do schoolwork freshman year. I don't know much about the gaming world. I had friends in high school that were into Magic, though. It sounds like you have a lot of fun doing those things. I have heard that high school-aged kids watch those Twitch shows.
ReplyDeleteHey Jake!
ReplyDeleteI think it is awesome that you are into video games. I used to play all of the time back in high school. My friends and I would que as a five stack and play DOTA 2 on the weekends. Those were some great times. I do not play nearly as much as I did back in those days. I am mostly into console games these days, but I do watch Dota on twitch when I get the chance. I would be interested in checking out your channel if you want to send me the link!
Hey, Jake! This is Jake. I can also see that the person that commented right before me is also Jake. What a time!
ReplyDeleteAnyways, props on working so hard in school to be where you are now! That's a lot of dedication across a variety of academic disciplines and a variety of schools. I'm glad that you now have a very clear idea of what you want to do! It really is pretty crazy, when you think about it, that most college freshmen have to generally choose the profession that they want to pursue at the ripe old age of 18.
Also, I have to commend your consistent gym habits as well. Do you work at Gold's, or do you just go there for multiple workouts a day? I think it's pretty difficult to muster up the motivation to workout a couple times a week, let alone as often as you do! Keep it up.
Hi Jake!
ReplyDeleteSuper cool to see how you journeyed your way to finally find the major and career that you are interested in. I have always been dead set on what I wanted to do since the age of 12, so I am glad that everything is still working out that way. I think it's really cool how you took something you enjoy to do and created something out of it! I also am inspired by your schedule to remain motivated to work on school and gym. What kind of workouts do you do? I am still trying to find my balance with school and the gym and we're already halfway through the semester, but I think I'm getting the hang of it. Well, nice to meet you!
Hi Jake!
ReplyDeleteI think its so cool that you want to be a sales rep. and now that you are a senior your so close to your goal! Also, playing football for a division one school is a big accomplishment and now that your done with that It’s nice to hear that you have found something new to do competitively. I hope you are having a good semester so far and I look forward to exploring the rest of your blog.
Hello, Jake!
ReplyDeleteSo I am actually a senior in chemical engineering and I cannot tell you how many times I have wanted to change majors because of the course-work! I am so happy that you landed on a major you enjoy and have a fantastic goal after graduation. School is hard enough, without doing extra work for a major that you don't even need to have your dream job! Also, I could not imagine managing any degree and playing a sport as well. Congrats on being so close to graduating.
Best of luck!
Hi Jake!
ReplyDeleteI think it's really cool you got to play football in college! I totally don't blame you for switching majors, I can't imagine trying to be a chemical engineering major and play a college sport! Calculus is by far my least favorite class, so I feel you there. You are completely right, there are a lot of different paths you can take to get to being a chemical sales rep, and it sounds like communications is a much better fit for you. Good luck in your senior year!!
Hi Jake! I could only imagine how tough it must have been playing football and being a chemical engineering major. I’m glad you figured out what you want to do though. I am also into gaming, but I am more into CSGO and not LoL. However, I do think it’s awesome that you stream and that you have an esports team.
ReplyDeleteHi Jake! That is awesome that you got to experience playing a sport in college! I cheered my freshman year, but also realized it is way too much for my major. I also think it's awesome that you ended up at OU and have your dream career in mind. I'm sure you will make a great sales rep since you will be interested in all that you are selling. Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteHey Jake! I’ve not changed my major before, but I can imagine it being a scary process. I’m a biology major, and the last two biology classes I’ve had to take didn’t go well. I’m starting to wonder if I’m working on the wrong major. It’s good that you’ve given it some thought, tried out different things, and found something you can be good at and happy with. I think it’s great that you have something you love to occupy your free time! It was nice to meet you and I hope you have a great rest of your semester.
ReplyDeleteHello Jake!
ReplyDeleteMTG and League of Legends are interesting to me. I play LOL sometimes but I haven't even placed in ranked yet. I do watch it a lot on Twitch though as well as the finals for the different splits and worlds. I was at DZ comics during one of the OKLCS finals that took place there, was fun to watch. I am normally there for the Red Dirt Rumble for fighting games like Tekken and stuff. Might catch you there sometime seeing as you play MTG and they have tournaments all the time.
Hello Jake!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you have a pretty good schedule going on for school. I am glad that you were able to find a major that you enjoy; I know firsthand the struggles of calculus. It's cool that you were able to find something to be competitive in after you decided to quit football. I hope your finals week goes well!
Hi Jake!
ReplyDeleteYou sound like you have your life figured out and even better your day-to-day schedule! That's always been a struggle for me. Not having a routine to my. I came into college with a set mindset and set profession along with my major, but almost everyone that comes in doesn't know what they want to do and they end up changing their major multiple times. It's very common. I see that you have a twitch and game competitively. I used to play LoL, but became an addiction so I decided to back out of it. Now I'm more of a console gamer and play as a hobby!
Hi Jake! What a cool path you've taken to get to the career you want! That's awesome. It's cool that you stream your gaming through Twitch — I'm not a huge gamer, so I've never watched a stream on Twitch, but I've heard really neat stuff about it. I've also seen artists and designers stream their creative process on Twitch, which I always love. I hope your finals week goes well!
